When I moved to Fort Worth in 1992, I found a community that I loved and shared values with. In 1997 I bought my first house in 76104. My wife and I raised our children here. We sent our children to Fort Worth ISD schools and we believed that they would have the opportunity to thrive and pursue the American Dream.
At the same time, I have worked in our community organizing to improve the lives of families and children. As the Community Center Director at Bethlehem United Community Center, I helped build a robust youth program that provided crucial education and support services to 120 of our children. Currently, I am the Historic Southside Neighborhood Association and Van Zandt Guinn Elementary School PTA Presidents. I understand the issues we face as a community and I am vested in our success.
Right now our schools are struggling. Only 24% of our 3rd Grade students are reading at level. For 4th Grade math, it is 19%. This is unacceptable and we need leadership that is committed to addressing this important issue.
As your Board of Education Member, I will focus on the issues that we know are important our children, family, and community. I would be honored to have your vote in this election!
BUILD STRONG SCHOOL COMMUNITIES
Strong neighborhoods build strong schools. I will use my successful career as a community organizer, neighborhood association president, and PTA president to build strong PTA's and neighborhood support for all our schools, families,
IMPROVE STUDENT READING & MATH SCORES
Right now our schools and students are struggling. Only 24% of our 3rd Grade students are reading at level. For 4th Grade math, it is 19%. This is unacceptable and I am committed to focusing on student success and ensuring all our students have the opportunity to learn .
ENSURE OUR SCHOOLS RECEIVE THE
SUPPORT THEY DESERVE
Our students, teachers, and schools need their fair share of resources to ensure that they can succeed. I will work to ensure that our schools receive the resources and support they need to ensure our students have academic success and are prepared for their futures.
BRINGING THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO THE COMMUNITY
Being a parent is hard work. Its really hard for our working families to find time in their schedules to attend a Board of Education meeting at a location far away from our neighborhoods. All parents and families deserve to have access to their elected officials and our official meetings. To ensure better access to our school board meetings, I will work to have meetings held in each of the school board member districts to allow local communities the opportunity to attend and express their thoughts on issues that are most important to them. Improving access to our board meetings provides better transparency of government actions and builds stronger connections between our communities and their school district leadership.
SELECTING A NEW SUPERINTENDENT
To have strong schools we must have strong neighborhoods supporting our schools. The search for a new Superintendent for our District is one of the most important issues the school board will undertake this year. I believe to ensure that the next Fort Worth ISD Superintendent is successful that we must have a selection process that is community driven. I am committed to ensuring that our selection process is community driven and that any finalists considered for the position will engage our families in our neighborhoods.
